Recently, I have found that I have a lot of my patients that are having wrist pain/numbness. So if you have an office job, you might want to listen up, this one's for you. If you've ever experienced numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain in your hand and wrist, you may be dealing with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). One of the major red flags for CTS that RMTs will look for is, pain in the wrist at night. This typically is pain so severe that it wakes you up from a deep sleep. This common condition affects millions of people and can interfere with everyday activities such as typing, driving, gripping objects, and even sleeping comfortably.

So, What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)?
The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway located on the palm side of your wrist. Running through this tunnel is the median nerve, which provides sensation to the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed or irritated within the tunnel. This pressure can lead to symptoms including:
Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers
Pain in the wrist, hand, or forearm
Weakness when gripping or holding objects
Difficulty performing fine motor tasks
Symptoms that worsen at night
What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Several factors can contribute to the development of CTS, including:
Repetitive hand and wrist movements
Prolonged computer or keyboard use
Poor workplace ergonomics
Pregnancy-related swelling
Arthritis and inflammation
Previous wrist injuries
Certain health conditions such as diabetes

How Massage Therapy May Help
While massage therapy cannot "cure" Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, it may help manage symptoms and improve overall function. Potential benefits include:
Reducing Muscle Tension
Tight muscles in the forearm, wrist, and hand can contribute to increased pressure around the median nerve. Massage therapy can help decrease muscle tension and improve tissue mobility.
Improving Circulation
Massage may encourage healthy blood flow to affected tissues, supporting the body's natural healing processes.
Decreasing Pain and Discomfort
Many individuals report reduced pain, stiffness, and discomfort following regular massage treatments.
Improving Range of Motion
Manual therapy techniques can help maintain flexibility and mobility in the wrist and forearm, making daily activities more comfortable.

How Acupuncture May Help
Acupuncture is another treatment option that may help reduce symptoms associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Potential benefits include:
Decreasing pain and inflammation
Promoting circulation
Reducing muscle tension
Supporting the body's natural healing response
Improving nerve function and symptom management
Many patients find that a combination of massage therapy and acupuncture provides greater symptom relief than either treatment alone.
Additional Self-Care Tips
Along with professional treatment, consider these strategies:
Take frequent breaks from repetitive tasks
Improve workstation ergonomics
Perform gentle stretching exercises for the hands and forearms
Wear a wrist splint if recommended by a healthcare professional
Avoid prolonged positions that place stress on the wrist
When to Seek Professional Help
If symptoms persist, worsen, or begin affecting your ability to perform daily activities, it's important to seek professional assessment. Early intervention may help prevent symptoms from progressing and support better long-term outcomes.
The Bottom Line
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be frustrating and disruptive, but there are treatment options available. Massage therapy and acupuncture may help reduce pain, improve mobility, decrease muscle tension, and support overall hand and wrist function. If you're experiencing symptoms of CTS, consider speaking with a qualified healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your needs.
